CAE Speaking Test Part 2

Tip

I only had 2 students preparing for CAE and their greatest fear was the speaking exam. For part 2 I cut different images and I put them in 2 piles. First of all, they had to find pairs and then they had to talk about 2 similarities, 2 differences and answer my questions. It boosted confidence! ❤

Learning Objective

Although the main objective is to show the difference between reading for gist and reading for detail, this activity will also reduce students’ levels of stress as it will help them realise they don’t need to understand everything from the text to be able to get the general idea.

Tip

Make copies of any part 3 from any PET exam book and crumple them up to make paper balls, like in the pic. Ask your Ss to pick up a paper ball, write down the words they get to see and compare their answers with a neighbour. Ask them to make guesses about what the text could be about.

Tip

For the FCE and CAE part 4 UoE question, where you must paraphrase using the given word, have students cross out any words that are the same or have the same meaning as in the given sentence. They will see which words still need to be used in the blank or whose meaning must be represented.

Speaking Test for KET for schools

Tip

In order to practise the part when the learners interact, you can give them pieces of card with question words and more pieces of card with different ideas. They have to put together as many different questions as they can and then, after checking them, they can practise their speaking in pairs.

Open cloze exercise-Use of English Paper, adapted to suit FCE/CAE/CPE exams

Tip

Students deal with an open cloze text, where they are given only the first, last and a couple more gaps in between. The rest, they have to find out themselves, as well as the missing word of course. It teaches them to read the text thoroughly and carefully and practise syntax/grammar.

Key Test for Schools, part 9. Writing text types. Letters or Notes.

Tip

I tell them to write letters to important people in my country or abroad and to ask them about things they are interested in. Due to HM The Queen's 65th Anniversary as Queen, I thought it would be a great idea for my students to send her a postcard and a letter. The experience was great and unique.
